A Tiny Meteorite Could Be Powering an Uncontrolled Leak on Soyuz Capsule : ScienceAlert


​Russian and NASA engineers had been evaluating a coolant leak on Thursday from a Soyuz crew capsule docked with the Worldwide Room Station (ISS) that may possibly have been prompted by a micrometeorite strike.

The coolant leak pressured the very last-minute cancellation of a spacewalk by two Russian cosmonauts on Wednesday and could perhaps effect a return flight to Earth by three crew users.

Russia’s space corporation Roscosmos and the US place company claimed the leak on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft did not pose any hazard to the astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the ISS.

Coolant tension fall

NASA later on added that the crew on the station “completed usual operations Thursday, including… configuring applications ahead of a prepared US spacewalk on Monday.”

Soyuz MS-22 flew Russian cosmonauts Sergei Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio to the ISS in September.

It is scheduled to convey them back to Earth in March and yet another vessel would have to be sent to the ISS if Soyuz MS-22 is unavailable.

Prokopyev and Petelin had been creating preparations for a spacewalk on Wednesday when the leak was identified.

“The crew described the warning product of the ship’s diagnostic program went off, indicating a stress fall in the cooling technique,” Roscosmos mentioned. “At the moment, all programs of the ISS and the ship are functioning usually, the crew is secure.”

NASA reported the leak experienced occurred on the “aft end” of Soyuz MS-22, which is secured to the place station.

There are now four other astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the house station in addition to Rubio, Prokopyev, and Petelin.
